FAQ

An MOT test is the annual vehicle check required in the UK for most vehicles that are over three years old. The test is to ensure that your vehicle meet the minimum safety and environmental standards required by law.

At the end of the test, the vehicle has either:

  • Pass – in which case it received MOT certificate valid for another year. Keep this certificate safe as you will need it to return your vehicle.
  • Fail – in which case the driver is given the list of issues that need to be addressed before the vehicle can be retested.

Did you know?
If your MOT has run out, you’re not allowed by law to drive or park your vehicle on the road. Driving without a valid MOT certificate can result in fines and penalties, and it may also invalidate your insurance. However you can drive to your MOT appointment, as long as it has been pre-booked.

If your vehicle fails its MOT test, it means that it did not meet the minimum safety and environmental standards set by the UK government. You will be given a 'refusal of an MOT test certificate,' and a list of the issues that caused the failure. These issues must be rectified before the vehicle can be retested and pass the MOT. It is important to note that it’s illegal to drive a vehicle that has failed its MOT. However, you are allowed to drive to your MOT appointment as long as it has been pre-booked. A courtesy vehicle may be available for the day of your appointment, depending on availability. If no vehicle is available, thanks to our Short-Term rental service you can hire a vehicle for a day, at a preferential cost. You can access this service and book your vehicle in advance via your My-Leasys portal.

During the MOT test, several parts of the vehicle will be inspected, such as the lights, steering and suspension, brakes, tyres, seat belts, exhaust emissions, glass and windscreen, bodywork, and registration plates.

Your MOT test must be carried out 2 to 4 weeks before the due date so that we have the certificate in time to re-licence your vehicle.

An initial MOT test is required when the vehicle reaches three years old after its registration. After this initial test, the MOT must be conducted every year. Some vehicles such as ambulance or taxis must have an initial MOT test one year after their registration.

Your MOT test can be carried out up to one month (minus a day) before the due date without affecting the MOT renewal date. This gives you a bit of flexibility to schedule the test at a convenient time. For example, if your MOT runs out on 18th June, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for the following year is 19th May.

On average, an MOT test takes between 45 minutes to an hour. However, timing can vary depending on the make, model, and condition of the vehicle. You will normally be given a time for the MOT test to take place, or asked to drop your vehicle off, and collect it later in the day depending on individual circumstances.

You don’t need to get the MOT test carried out if the MOT date expires after the vehicle is returned.

If the MOT expires before the collection date you must have the vehicle MOT test done, to enable the collection agent to pick up the vehicle.
